Each table group was initiated a context to research, ours being single used products/packaging

This encourages group thought and collaborative work

Following this we had to present our ideas to the rest of our peers, a 3 minute presentation with minimal to no planning. This was a challenge as usually with presentations I will spend time preparing

My conclusions from single use products research:

The problem:

Plastics take hundreds of years to decompose so they need to be purposeful.

Plastics are related to health risks - micro-plastics contain chemical additives - related to cancer and other illnesses

Plastics are very negative to the environment and wildlife

Adhesives make it difficult to breakdown products

How to tackle this:

Does price influence the way we see and treat products?

Design for longevity, getting rid of a throwaway culture.

Make use of alternatives: e.g. technical and biological nutrients, e.g. potatopak, mycelium

Encourage a circular economy, sharing and re-using products

Reduce plastic in packaging, e.g. laser engraving information onto fruits rather than using stickers, adhesives etc.

Single-use plastic bags are detrimental to our environment, tote bags should be more encouraged/more durable/fashionable e.g. add unique patterns/graphics to bags

Jigsaw/modular designs should become a normality, less adhesives - this makes products easier to repair and extend the longevity of the item e.g. IKEA furniture and knock-down fittings.

Incorporating the customer in the making progress makes the user appreciate the product more.

Multi-purpose packaging - can we change and influence people to think that packaging can be multi-purposeful - multiple uses rather than acting as a throwaway item.
